Help with planning a road trip?

Next year I will be driving from North Carolina to Washington. I would like to have my trip preplanned, including overnight stops and maybe some sight seeing along the way. I would like to drive about 500 or 600 miles a day. I have done something close to that, going through Colorado then onto wa though instead of the route you will probably take through the northern us.
